Custom Guardrail
Use this if you want to write code to run a custom guardrail
Quick Start
1. Write a CustomGuardrail Class
You only have to implement one method: apply_guardrail. LiteLLM pulls the content out of a request (or a response), hands it to you as inputs, and writes back whatever you return. Raise an exception to block the call.

apply_guardrail parameters

request_data | The request body. request_data["metadata"] holds the caller — user_api_key_user_id, user_api_key_team_id, and so on. |

Every key in inputs is optional — you only get the ones this call actually had:

structured_messages | The full messages in OpenAI format, so you can tell a system message from a user message. |
model | The model this call is routed to. |
To allow the call, return inputs. To mask, edit texts or tool_calls in place — LiteLLM maps them back onto the original request or response.
structured_messages is the exception: replace the list with a new one. LiteLLM only uses it if you hand back a different object, so edits made in place are ignored.
While streaming, you can also set stream_holdback_chars — a per-text count of trailing characters for LiteLLM to withhold, so a match never gets split across two chunks.
If you need more fine-grained control, you can implement individual event hooks instead of (or in addition to) apply_guardrail:

2. Pass your custom guardrail class in LiteLLM config.yaml
In the config below, we point the guardrail to our custom guardrail by setting guardrail: custom_guardrail.myCustomGuardrail

apply_guardrail runs in all three modes. The mode decides when it runs and whether it sees the request or the response.

If you mask or rewrite content, use pre_call. during_call runs your guardrail in parallel with the LLM call to save latency, so it reliably blocks a bad request, but your edits may not land before the request leaves.
If you implement the individual event hooks instead, the same three modes call async_pre_call_hook, async_moderation_hook, and async_post_call_success_hook.
For streaming responses, post_call guardrails run on the fully assembled response after all chunks have been delivered to the client. This means post_call guardrails on streaming are audit-only — they can inspect and log the complete response, but cannot block content delivery. Guardrail results are recorded in guardrail_information within the logging payload for compliance and auditing.
To filter or block streaming content in real-time, use async_post_call_streaming_iterator_hook instead, which processes chunks as they arrive.
Advanced: Multiple modes with individual event hooks
If you're using individual event hooks, you can configure multiple guardrails with different modes:

3. Start LiteLLM Gateway

This mounts your custom_guardrail.py file from your local directory to the /app directory in the Docker container, making it accessible to the LiteLLM Gateway.

Advanced: Individual Event Hooks
Pro: More flexibility Con: You need to implement this for each LLM call type (chat completions, text completions, embeddings, image generation, moderation, audio transcription, pass through endpoint, rerank, etc. )
For more fine-grained control over when and how your guardrail runs, you can implement individual event hooks. This gives you flexibility to:
- Modify inputs before the LLM call
- Run checks in parallel with the LLM call (lower latency)
- Validate or modify outputs after the LLM call
- Process streaming responses
